Paedodontics and your precious child

London dentistry is focusing on the dental hygiene of children more than ever. In the city many dental courses in Paedodontics are being organized and currently taking place in order to begin to establish a specialised, accessible and reliable dental care for children. By reinforcing dental health to children it is hoped that it will prevent the development of bad dental habits at an early age and stop or identify inherited dental problems early so that children have a better chance of successful treatment. This will provide the opportunity for youngsters to have good long term dental health.

Training in Paedodontics is an excellent opportunity for those dentists who find working with children fulfilling and adopt an enthusiastic attitude to promoting good dental health to the young. However, Paedodontics is not only an appealing specialised field to those who find job satisfaction in working with and helping children but the field also caters for those who have an interest in a range of dental treatments. Children require all kinds of treatments so paedodontics need to be skilled in a range of treatments from fillings and minor tooth repairs to oral surgery. A reward of becoming a Paedodontic is the variety of dental tasks and treatments the job entails.

At present there are a number of opportunities in London dentistry for those interested in Paedontics. In addition to the courses and training there are also dental jobs available for those already qualified.

Toothache and garlic

The pain that one gets through wisdom tooth is sometimes not avoidable but the pain that is caused due to gum diseases and other reasons are curable. There are lots of herbs that are very useful in curing toothache and garlic is one among them. The following are some of the key facts relating to how garlic cures one’s toothache:

1. The garlic that would be required for curing the pain in the mouth can be either a small clove or a big one. The important thing is that that it should be fresh and with lot of juice because that is the thing which would be ultimately coming in handy for curing the tooth ache.

2. Take the cloves of the garlic and crush them to get the juice you want. You can use two or three cloves for that matter but if you think you would probably need more then you can have some more with you.

3. Try to use some salt with the garlic as that would make the effect of the garlic even better.

4. After having mixed both the salt and the garlic paste, take that paste and place it on the area which is causing pain. Keep the paste on the affected area for some time till the pain is completely gone. It would generally take a few minutes and everything would be back to normal after sometime.

5. The anti bacterial properties help in getting relief from the tooth ache. It is a tried and tested method and it does not have any side effects as well.

When I was a lad…….

We all have fond, and probably wildly incorrect, memories of our childhood. Summers were longer, the sun was hotter and smiles were brighter- pretty amazing considering that toothpaste then was little more than minty goo!

We tend to forget the poverty, and recession, and the millions out of work, and the strikes and the troubles in Ireland. Do we genuinely not remember them, or were we protected from them by our parents to ensure that our idyllic childhoods remained just that. While we love the new technology of today and spend millions of pounds a year on video games, consoles and the like, we seem to have lost something along the way. For a start children don’t know how to play anymore. If they aren’t stuck in front of a TV screen they are on street corners underage drinking and being generally a right pain in the proverbial.

We made our own entertainment, like pretending to play shops. We would take it in turns to play shopkeeper and anything we could get hold of would be our stock. We would raid the house for the like of tins and packets, and use sticks for cigarettes. One girl along the street was very posh and said her shop was Harrods; she had real things in her shop and even sold mouthwash! We just left her to play alone.

When we were bored with shops the lads would play football and the girls skippy, which was usually a rope tied to the lamp post, but we played for hours until we were called in at dusk. So tired we could barely hold our toothbrush. A blissful sleep followed, and we did it all again the next day.

Our kids today seem to lack any kind of imagination, and while they are all getting high faluting jobs in IT and the like, the memories of their childhoods don’t seem as vivid.  I suppose every day runs into one when you’re sitting in your room shooting people over and over again!

A dental bridge for your missing teeth needs

Dental bridges are aimed at individuals with teeth missing. The teeth at either side of the gap are used to secure the bridge. This means the healthy teeth have to go under a little preparation. The two teeth are crowned then a false tooth called a pontic is placed in the gap. The crowns are actually bonded to the pontic so the crowns bridge the pontic securing it in the gap. The pontic can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or combination of the materials. As the pontic is secured in the mouth, it is not as noticeable the tooth is false.  Some bridges require the healthy teeth trimming down by the dentist; however, the resin bonded bridges do not require any trimming of the neighbouring healthy teeth. Resin bonded bridges are a recent type of bridge to be introduced o dentists. The pontic has a wing on the left and right side. These wings are simply bonded to the healthy teeth beside the gap.

Why you should not delay dental bridging

In most cases people try to replace their front teeth as soon as they can as they feel uncomfortable having such a visible gap in the teeth. However, people do not tend to be as concerned about tooth loss at the back of the mouth. Although tooth loss at the back of the mouth is not as noticeable as teeth missing from the front, it is still essential to seek dental advice and treatment. Dentists in Kent have said, if the tooth loss is ignored, other teeth may start to tilt into the gap. Extra pressure will also be put on the healthy teeth either side the gap as there will be more work for them to do if one is missing.  This will make the healthy teeth susceptible to damage.

Smile makeovers; rocket science it isn`t, popular it is

We see our pop and movie idols on the T.V. every day and we all envy them their white teeth, but now we can all have those bright white molars. The cost of cosmetic dentistry has come down of late, and with recent advances in science we can either do it at home ourselves or get it done in a salon in town. Most chemists stock a DIY kit that allows you to bleach your teeth just as you would your hair, if you so desired. The kit has a rubber gum shield in it and this is used to make a mould of the teeth, into which the bleach is poured. You heat it up in hot water and then bite into it, simple as that. The bleach is poured into the impression shield and left to do its job, you will see instant results, albeit limited ones. A bright light shone onto a bleaching gel is the next format available. This is done usually at a salon by a trained technician. The process takes an hour and is done in three fifteen minute sessions, and again the results are instant. This method does cause a little discomfort for a few days, but painkillers will take care of that. You will need to avoid certain foods and drinks to keep the colour bright and white. The effects are also very good for your morale; a nice white smile will do wonders for a slacking confidence. Veneers are next in line, but cost a lot more although they are really effective and again instant. Lumineer’s are great to have and these will cover a lot of teeth defects, from a cracked or chipped tooth to a discoloured and even a misaligned tooth in some cases. They are like contact lenses in their simplicity and fitting easiness. Having a lip they will easily slip over your teeth and are then fixed in place with dental glue and a special light to cure it dry. You can have one or many teeth fixed at the same time, and the procedure is very quick. These are quite thin, although they are very effective. The next type of veneer fitted by a dentist is a slightly thicker one, this is fixed in place with a type of cement, but the tooth needs to be shaved lightly to make a good adhesion and to allow the veneer to be embedded into the depth of the tooth. They last from 3-15 years and are easily replaceable when worn out.
